Location: Ryan Johnson's Training Facility, 32744 Oak Grove Rd, Paola, KS

Event Description

When: January 2nd, 2022 (Sunday)

Who: Wrestlers age 8 and up

Schedule: 10:00am – 3:30pm  (Bring your lunch or a small snack for a break midway) (One Day Camp)

Camp Focus:  Defense/Blocking Head position, blocking, and spending more time having the opponent in a front headlock, is far more beneficial than having an opponent deep on a wrestler’s leg. Blocking is the primary aspect of developing a defensive game, and most kids miss this in their training.  At my weekly sessions, we spend a ton of time on this skill.  I’m a firm believer that wrestling can be simplified, and not complicated, and this is just one of many areas of focus that quickly gets young wrestlers winning more matches.  Aside from blocking, we will cover defending deep attacks with a core set of skills (meaning hip pressure defense, not just moves).  I spent 14 years in division 1 wrestling rooms as an athlete and coach, so I have an understanding of how to get the kids to approach their matches with a proper mindset, which creates a more composed and disciplined wrestler.  Composure over panic is what I tell the kids in my weekly sessions.  Wrestlers who have great positioning and good blocking skills are more confident.  And from my experience it’s not that hard to get kids to do this.
